Umesh Yadav breaks the all-time IPL record for wickets against a single opponent

In the second match of the 2023 Indian Premier League season, Umesh Yadav made history by becoming the player with the most wickets against a single opponent. Yadav took his 34th wicket against the Punjab Kings, finishing with figures of 1/27 in his four overs.

After Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and put the Punjab Kings to bat first, Tim Southee struck early to dismiss the opening batter, Prabhsimran Singh. However, the KKR bowlers struggled to take further wickets as Bhanuka Rajapaksa and skipper Shikhar Dhawan built an 86-run partnership for the second wicket.

Umesh Yadav finally broke the partnership by taking the wicket of Rajapaksa, who had scored a half-century. Yadav’s wicket proved to be a turning point in the game, as it gave KKR the breakthrough they needed to slow down the Punjab Kings’ momentum.

Despite losing early wickets, a combined effort from the top and middle-order batsmen helped the Punjab Kings set a challenging target of 192 runs.

With one wicket in his four overs, Umesh Yadav became the player with the most wickets against a single opponent in IPL history, surpassing Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine’s joint record of 33 wickets against Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings, respectively.

Players with the most wickets against a single opponent in IPL history include Umesh Yadav, who has 34 wickets against the Punjab Kings. Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine, both with 33 wickets, Lasith Malinga with 31 wickets against Chennai Super Kings, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with 30 wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders are the other top performers.
