Chennai Super Kings: Time to Fix the Away Game Puzzle

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are not just a cricket franchise — they are a legacy built on consistency, strategic depth, and unmatched leadership. With multiple IPL titles to their name, CSK has often set the benchmark for team performance and culture. However, IPL 2025 is revealing a side of CSK that fans and analysts didn’t expect — a team struggling to win on the road.

In their last four away fixtures, CSK has failed to register a single win:

  • vs GT in Ahmedabad – Lost by 35 runs
  • vs RCB in Bengaluru – Lost by 27 runs
  • vs RR in Guwahati – Lost by 6 wickets
  • vs PBKS in Mullanpur – Lost by 7 wickets

What stands out is not just the losses, but how the team has struggled across departments — lack of early wickets, inconsistent middle-order, and a rising economy rate at the death. Their average first-innings score in these matches is below 160, while bowlers are conceding at over 9 runs per over on average.

In contrast, CSK at Chepauk has looked like a completely different unit — well-balanced, aggressive, and composed under pressure. Their win rate at home this season is 80%, backed by stronger performances with both bat and ball.

So what’s going wrong away from home?
Is it the unfamiliar pitch conditions, flat powerplay bowling, or simply tactical execution? The answers aren’t straightforward, but what’s clear is that this trend could derail their playoff hopes if not addressed soon.

As Head Coach Stephen Fleming stated recently, “Balance in the game is crucial. It’s not just about hitting sixes.” His words hold true for team balance too — and right now, CSK must find theirs on the road.

With the business end of the tournament fast approaching, CSK has little time to reflect and reset. The question now is: Can the kings reclaim their crown away from home?
