Aakash Chopra picks Ravi Bishnoi as leading contender for India’s T20 World Cup squad

India’s impressive 4-1 victory over Australia in the 5-match T20I series saw young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi shine, securing 9 wickets and earning the coveted ‘Player of the Series’ title. Aakash Chopra, former Indian cricketer, commended Bishnoi’s standout performance and highlighted its significance in the context of the upcoming T20 World Cup in June.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra emphasized the competition Bishnoi faces for a spot in the T20 World Cup squad, considering the depth of talent in India’s spin-bowling department.

“In my opinion, this series was crucial for Ravi Bishnoi, especially considering leg-spinners. Right now, he’s the top choice, but as we approach the World Cup, there will be added pressure on him,” he said.

In the crucial 5th T20I match against Australia, Bishnoi’s impactful performance included claiming 2 wickets while conceding only 29 runs in 4 overs. Despite Chopra acknowledging Bishnoi as the current front-runner, he pointed out the tough competition from spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal, Mayank Markande, and Rahul Chahar.

Chopra recognized the importance of Bishnoi’s consistency throughout the series.

“In bilateral series, you face the same opponent multiple times, unlike World Cups where you meet them again only in the semi-finals. Despite the familiarity by the fifth game, Ravi Bishnoi impressed by staying effective. Bowling in the powerplay and handling a wet ball, he covered all the important aspects,” he added.

Legends like Muttiah Muralitharan have noticed Bishnoi’s talent, and he has earned a spot in the T20I series against South Africa. This shows he’s making a mark beyond the bilateral series.

As the T20 World Cup 2024 gets closer, Ravi Bishnoi’s consistent and good performance makes him a strong contender for India’s specialist spinner role in the tournament.
