Shami, Gill, and Kohli enter record books as India maintain 100% win record in ICC Cricket World Cup 

India claimed a fifth successive win in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. India got the job done against New Zealand at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. Notably, New Zealand suffered their maiden defeat in the ongoing World Cup. New Zealand rode on solid knocks from Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell, who shared a record 159-run stand for the third wicket. Mitchell’s heroics made the difference as he smashed a solid 130. For India, speedster Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers. He claimed 5/54 from his 10 overs.

In response, Indian openers added 71 runs before both players departed (76/2). Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer added 52 runs, and the former also stitched a decent fifty-plus stand alongside KL Rahul. India were in a spot of bother in between. However, a match-winning stand between Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja helped India, who chased down the score in 48 overs.

Here are the major records that were broken in this contest.

Fastest batter to 2000 ODI runs

Shubman Gill scored 26 from 31 balls, slamming five fours. Gill has now become the fastest to 2000 ODI runs in terms of innings. As per ESPNcricinfo, Gill achieved the milestone in his 38th inning. He broke the record for former South African ace Hashim Amla, who got to 2000 runs in ODIs from 40 innings. Shikhar Dhawan took 48 innings and is the second-best Indian to the milestone.

Gill has raced to 2012 runs at 62.87. He has six tons and 10 half-centuries. He is also the first to 1300-plus runs (ODIs) in 2023. He owns 1325 runs at 66.25.

1000 runs at home for Shreyas Iyer

India’s number four batter, Shreyas Iyer, was looking in good touch before falling prey to Trent Boult. He managed 33 versus the Kiwis. Iyer has now raced past 1000 ODI runs at home. He owns 1004 runs at 50.20. Overall, Shreyas has scored 1931 runs at 45.97.

50 sixes in ODIs for Rohit in 2023

Rohit Sharma continued his domination in terms of achieving milestones with sixes. Rohit scored a fiery 40-ball 46. He slammed four fours and four sixes. He is now the first batter this year in Odis to smash 50-plus sixes (53). Rohit has joined an exclusive club. Former West Indies legend Chris Gayle (56 in 2019) and South Africa’s AB de Villiers (58 in 2015) are the only other batters with 50-plus ODI sixes in a calendar year.

Rohit now owns 309 ODI sixes. In international cricket, the veteran opener has smacked 568.

1500 ODI runs for Kohli versus New Zealand

Virat Kohli was at his sensational best, and his love affair with the Kiwis continued. Kohli has gone past 1500 ODI runs against New Zealand, becoming the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to achieve the milestone. Sachin scored 1750 runs versus New Zealand in his career. In 30 matches, Kohli now owns 1528 runs at 56.59. He owns five tons and nine fifties.

1000 runs at home against the Kiwis 

Out of Kohli’s 1528 runs versus the Kiwis, 1005 runs have come at home. He owns an average of 71.78 at home versus New Zealand. His tally includes nine fifty-plus scores.

12 fifty-plus scores in ODI World Cups for Kohli

Kohli has now hammered 12 scores of fifty-plus in ODI World Cup history. He has equaled former Sri Lankan ace Kumar Sangakkara and Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan. Kohli also steered clear of Ricky Ponting, who slammed 11 50-plus scores in his career. Kohli owns 1365 runs in the ICC WC history at 56.87.

Highest scorer in ICC World Cup 2023

Kohli’s 95 was laced with eight fours and two sixes. He consumed 104 balls. Kohli is now the top scorer in the 2023 World Cup. He has raced to 340 runs from five matches, smashing three fifties and a century. Rohit is the only other player with 300-plus runs in the ongoing World Cup.

Kohli slams his 69th ODI fifty; fourth-highest scorer in ODIs

Kohli smacked his 69th ODI fifty, falling five short of a 49th hundred. He has accumulated 13437 ODI runs at 58.16. Meanwhile, Kohli is now the 4th-highest scorer in ODIs. He has gone past Sanath Jayasuriya, who smashed 13430 runs.

Shami becomes first Indian with multiple five-wicket hauls in ODI World Cups

Mohammed Shami picked his second ODI World Cup fifer and a third in ODIs. He is now the first Indian bowler to take two or more five-wicket hauls in ODI WCs. Meanwhile, Shami has matched Alfe de Mel, Glenn McGrath, Shahid Afridi, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shaheen Afridi with two five-wicket hauls at the World Cup. Mitchell Starc remains at the top with three such figures.

Shami surpasses Kumble, achieves this record

Shami’s fifer has seen him surpass Anil Kumble in terms of ODI World Cup scalps. Kumble took 31 wickets in his World Cup career. Shami has raced to 36 wickets at 15.02. He is only behind Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath, who are tied with 44 World Cup scalps for India.

Joint-highest five-wicket hauls for India

Shami now owns 176 ODI wickets at 25.08. He is the ninth Indian bowler to claim 175 or more scalps. Meanwhile, Shami has now become the joint-highest in terms of five-wicket hauls for India in ODIs. He has matched the likes of Srinath and Harbhajan Singh (3 five-wicket hauls each).

Record stand between Ravindra and Mitchell

Ravindra and Mitchell shared a defining 159-run stand for the third wicket. It’s now New Zealand’s highest partnership for any wicket against India at the World Cup. It’s also the sixth-highest stand against India by any side in World Cup history. In ODIs, this stand is now New Zealand’s third-best for the third wicket against India and the 8th-highest overall.

Best individual score against India in ODI World Cups

Daryl Mitchell smashed a solid 130-run knock. He hammered nine fours and five sixes. Mitchell slammed his fifth ODI century. He has got to 100 fours in ODIs, besides racing to 1293 runs. Mitchell has now smashed the highest individual score by a Kiwi against India in ODI World Cups. He is also just the second Kiwi to score a World Cup hundred versus India after GM Turner. Meanwhile, Mitchell has also posted the fifth-best score by any player against India in the ODI World Cup.
