Yuzvendra Chahal’s omission a big surprise: Matthew Hayden

The recent announcement of India’s Asia Cup squad has ignited discussions and debates, particularly due to the notable omission of experienced spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden expressed his views on the subject, highlighting Chahal’s exceptional skills and the challenging decisions faced by the selectors.

Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, shed light on the intricacies of team composition. He pointed out the difficulty in accommodating two wrist spinners within the lineup, suggesting that Kuldeep Yadav had been prioritized over Chahal in the pecking order.

Matthew Hayden recently voiced his perspective on the matter. “There are some significant omissions. Chahal, in particular, that leg-spinner, is such a wonderful player, and it must be difficult for the selectors because they also have Kuldeep Yadav… he’s a superb player. So, they’ve chosen him as an option,” Hayden told India Today.

In an unexpected twist, Tilak Varma secured his maiden ODI call-up for the Asia Cup, following an impressive performance in the West Indies T20Is. Hayden offered insights into this strategic move, particularly in the context of the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024.

Varma’s standout performance in the West Indies T20Is, where he emerged as India’s highest run-scorer with 173 runs.

“There will always be some players in the run-up to World Cups, and we’ve seen Tilak Varma’s class. I think it’s a good strategy not only for this World Cup but also potentially for the next T20 World Cup 2024,” he said.

With the likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah returning to the squad, India will be expected to perform at their best in the Asia Cup.
