Former chief selector MSK Prasad has backed Suryakumar Yadav’s inclusion in the ODI World Cup squad, stressing the need for role clarity to unleash his potential. Despite excelling in T20Is, Suryakumar is yet to solidify his ODI spot, prompting discussions about his form.
Prasad’s conviction remains unshaken. He lauded Suryakumar Yadav saying, “I am certain that Suryakumar will attend the World Cup. If someone can be a No. 1 player in the T20 format, it indicates that he possesses exceptional potential, as seen by his performances in T20Is for his country and in the IPL. We are aware of his ability to absorb pressure.”
“I personally believe he has yet to grasp his role in the team. If he grasps his job and plays accordingly, I am confident he will be one of India’s biggest match-winners and best-finishers in the World Cup. He has the ability, and we must support him,” Prasad remarked.
Suryakumar’s batting positions have been varied, hindering consistency. His recent focus on batting in the final overs aims to address this. Prasad highlights that role definition, especially in the finisher’s role, will be pivotal.
“What Rohit and Dravid have done now is fantastic; they have probably given him role clarity. That will undoubtedly help him because that is the situation he appreciates the best (the finisher’s role). I am sure Suryakumar will be relieved, and he can begin planning accordingly,” he concluded.
